Hubris was a common problem in mythology. Hubris was humans thinking they were better than a god in some way. Often they were killed or morphed into an animal, plant or inanimate object as punishment for their boastfulness.

Examples of hubris include the story of Arachne who thought she could weave better than Athena and was turned into a spider and the story of Niobe, the mother who thought she was greater than the goddess Leto. For her hubris her children were killed and she was turned into a crying rock, or waterfall/spring.

Sisyphus – He was the cleverest King. He was constantly finding ways to fool the gods. When he finally died he was given the task of pushing a bolder up a hill for eternity.

Bellerophon – He is the grandson of Sisyphus and was a great tamer of horses. While asleep one night he dreamed he was given a golden bridle that would make Pegasus tame. When he woke it was in his hand. He put the bridle on the horse and did great things. All of his attention got to his head and he put himself equal to Zeus. So he tried to ride the horse to the kingdom of the gods but Pegasus kicked him off and he fell to the earth and became a beggar.

Acteon – He was wondering around the forest and came across Artemis bathing. Instead of turning away he stayed staring. This was disrespect so she splashed water on him and he turned into a deer.

Niobe – She was blessed with 14 children and thought she was better than Apollo and Artemis and so they killed her children and turned her into an unfeeling rock.

Cassiopeia – This queen compared herself to the goddess of the sea and this angered Poseidon so he sent a sea monster to terrorize her kingdom.

For the review game we made a review matching game that matched the person to thier hurbis. I was unable to put this game on here because it is on a game board.

Back in the day of the Gods and Goddess. Their were regular people and then you have the gods. There were some brave people who tried to compete with the gods and their were people who thought they were better than the gods. If a normal person does it, it is called Hubris. Their were many stories of Hubris and i am going to only share with you the most common one. This story was about Athena and Arachne. Athena found out that Arachne said that she was a better weaver than Athena. so they then had a contest to see who was better and of couse Athena wins and Arachne is punished and turned into a spider. Many people believe that wasnt a punishment but a blessing. i personally believe is was a punishment and now the 2009 society has to deal with spiders.

The way i tought Hubris to my classmates by creating a cross word puzzles with different people who dealt with hubris

Our definition of hubris is when one shows they are better than a god. There are many types of hubris. The types being: Hubris making fun of the gods, hubris thinking you are as good as the gods, and hubris taking advantage of the gods. The penalties for displaying hubris were death, eternal punishment, and metamorphosis. Examples of hubris were the stories of Arachne, Bellerophon, Niobe, and King Midas. For our activity I created a graphic organizer to display the types of hubris and the punishments for it. One question to ask is: Which type of hubris we talked about do you think is the worst to display?
